It does seem that the system could still use a bit of fine tuning if they expect anyone to use non-LI weapons.

@Tesh: Fair enough, but there are limits to how long players will feel that they're getting true ROI from horizontal progression. How many outfits do you really need? Mounts? Pets? Blizzard is now looking for legitimately different rewards, like a squire who can serve as a mobile bank, but how can they follow that act? A second mobile bank with a separate cooldown? As to the budget, there are certainly other revenue streams out there, I'm just saying that $15/month out of 300K users may be an easier approach than expecting to sell millions of copies of a $50 box.

@Anjin: Thanks. :) We have seen a generally greater tolerance for inflation than nerfs, and I will concede that this may be affecting the relative value of certain content. I still think it's the least of the available evils, but hopefully someone smarter than me has an even better idea for some game down the line.Green Armadillohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15564045048380177626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-826986957606858027.post-46487783524148571702009-06-17T16:29:00.585-04:002009-06-17T16:29:00.585-04:00I appreciate you providing a voice of sanity among...I appreciate you providing a voice of sanity among all the cries of frustration over gear progression. There are smarter and stupider to make gear obsolete. I hope MMOs continue to innovate and find ways to meet the conflicting demands.Marty Runyonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08456700794989273981noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-826986957606858027.post-49229632309082616442009-06-17T12:23:54.433-04:002009-06-17T12:23:54.433-04:00Note, "progression" need not be vertical...Note, "progression" need not be vertical progression. Players need a sense of ROI on their time and money invested under a sub model, but that doesn't mean that the DIKU model is the only valid progression path... or that the sub model is the only way to make an MMO.Teshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11760350503235227686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-826986957606858027.post-57552748557687964652009-06-17T11:01:16.492-04:002009-06-17T11:01:16.492-04:00Yes, I absolutely agree. It must be possible for new players to catch up with veterans, and gear resets are as good a way as any to achieve this.

I like gear resets myself, because I love the idea of replacing all my boring old stuff with shiny new stuff, and all the decisions that that process entails.

With regards to LotRO's legendary item system, I have little problem with the idea of a regular reset, but when I wrote my post about it, I felt that it was failing as illusory progression because many players were simply choosing to opt-out instead of engage. The 'random setting' was dialled up a little too high.

Some of the things I suggested in my post are actually being introduced in Book 8, which is great, though I'm still disappointed that unique mainhand weapons, whether they are quest rewards or crafted, will remain redundant unless Turbine completely revamp the system.unwizehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04022166293890196170noreply@blogger.com
